Between 2006 and 2022, Germany issued a special 2 Euro coin from a Bundesland (province) every year, depicting an important object from that region. The theme of this 2006 German 2 Euro coin, which is the first in the series, is the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost of the states of Germany, comprising most of the historical duchy of Holstein and the southern part of the former Duchy of Schleswig. Its capital city is Kiel; other notable cities are Lübeck and Flensburg.
The Schleswig-Holstein €2 coin features the Holstentor, the gate symbolising the town of Lübeck.
Germany has five mints which strike circulation coins; they are distinguished by their mint marks - A for Berlin, D for Munich, F for Stuttgart, G for Karlsruhe and J for Hamburg.
