This coin set was issued to mark the 25th anniversary of the Britannia coin range. It set contains all four denominations of gold Britannia coins issued in 1987, as well as their respective counterparts of 2012, all in Proof FDC grade. The composition is 91.7% gold, with the 1987 coins alloyed with copper and the 2012 coins alloyed with silver.

The reverse design is the "definitive" Standing Britannia type.

The 1987 coins were taken from the secondary market (i.e. their mintages are included in the 1987 mintage).
