In 2012 to commemorate the XXX Olympiad, known as the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Royal Mint released this very special Limited Issue nine-coin set which includes all the coins from the "Citius, Altius, Fortius" (Faster, Higher, Stronger) series.
Designed by renowned sculptor John Bergdahl, the coins are inspired by the Olympic motto. Each individual coin features a Roman god and an Olympic sport. "Faster" pairs the god Neptune with Sailing, Diana with Cycling and Mercury with Running. "Higher" shows the god Jupiter with the sport of Diving, Apollo with Gymnastics and Juno with Pole Vaulting. "Stronger" features the god Mars with Boxing, Vulcan with Hammer-throwing and Minerva with Javelin.
Each theme has one 1oz gold coin denominated as £100 and two quarter-ounce coins denominated as £25. They were issued in three consecutive years, so the set has coins issued in 2010, 2011 and 2012. All are in 22-carat gold and Proof FDC grade.
