This set contains five 50 pence coins carrying the reverse designs of commemorative 50 pence issued in earlier years and having topics related to British culture; all coins in the set are dated 2019.
The Royal Mint says: "Decimalisation meant new coins and the most radical of all was the 50p. A world first, its seven-sided design allowed it to roll smoothly in vending machines. An everyday staple, over the years signature designs have made it highly collectable - 50p coins celebrate every aspect of British culture from sporting achievements to children’s literature.
As the coin marks its 50th birthday, The Royal Mint is delighted to present a set of extra special coins, a carefully curated selection of design classics from the last 50 years of production. Christopher Ironside’s seated Britannia is presented alongside coins commemorating the first sub-four-minute mile, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Guides and one of Britain’s most sought-after coins - the Kew Gardens 50p. Each coin is year-dated 2019, struck in fine silver and finished to Proof standard - fitting tributes to an iconic coin and the popularity of these standout designs." |
