This set contains the proof versions of the four different denominations of the American Platinum Eagle coin issued in 2004. The coins were struck by the West Point Mint and have a W mint mark, unlike the bullion coins which were struck by the Philadelphia Mint and have no mint mark.
The proof version also features a different one-year design on the reverse, depicting a bald eagle clutching a laurel branch, perched at the base of the statue of America. The statue is one of the Four Continents group situated at The Alexander Hamilton Custom House in New York City, sculpted by Daniel Chester French in 1905. America is depicted seated, holding a torch in her right hand, and with a sheaf of corn stalks in her lap. |
