In 1990, Fiji switched to coins of the same size as the earlier (large) dodecagonal coins but made of steel instead of copper-nickel.

These large 50 cent coins were demonetised in 2009.

Crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right wearing pearls (effigy known as the "Third Portrait", by Raphael David Maklouf); around, the legend ELIZABETH II FIJI and the date. In tiny letters on neck truncation, the designer's initials RDM.

Takia (an outrigger sailing canoe, described on the mint sets as a "drua"), below, the value and denomination: 50 cents.
