In 1969, Fiji changed to a decimal currency. The currency structure was the 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c and 20c coins, and the $0.50, $1, $2, $5, $10, and $20 notes.

In October 2008, the issuance of 1 and 2 cents coins ceased. In February 2009, a new set of smaller size and lighter coins were introduced. The larger size coins of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents as well as the 1 and 2 cents were demonetised in April 2009.

According to Krause:
2009 and later issues are nickel-plated steel and measure 24 mm, with a mass of 4.68 g.

Obverse

Between 1969 and 2010, the obverse of the 20 cent coins depicted an effigy of the monarch, legend and date. During this time, the only monarch was Queen Elizabeth II and the legend used was ELIZABETH II FIJI.

In 2012, a new series was started where the obverse depicts representatives of the fauna of Fiji. The 20 cent coins have a Kakā (Kadavu Shining Parrot) on a branch; the legend is FIJI [year] Kakā.

Tabua on braided sennit cord (a Fijian traditional cultural gift, the polished tooth of a sperm whale); above, 20; below, cents. Contrary to popular belief, these objects were not used as currency.

2012 and later issues have Tabua around above.
