Australia has two mints, the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint, which are both very active in the bullion coinage space; coins issued by them are legal tender.
Additionally, there are private issuers of bullion which is not legal tender and is targeted at investors and not at coin collectors - such as this one.
This limited edition gold gram bar was made by the Perth Mint as a collector piece for fans of the popular television show SpongeBob SquarePants.
The mint says about it: In the underwater city of Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob SquarePants is the fry cook at fast food restaurant The Krusty Krab. Responsible for preparing its popular Krabby Patty, SpongeBob’s life revolves around a wacky ensemble of marine characters - customers, co-workers, friends, and rivals - with whom he shares many madcap adventures. In this absurd world, where his home is a pineapple shared with a pet snail that meows like a cat, the animated chronicles of the optimistic and enthusiastic yellow sea sponge represent an undisguised celebration of innocent nonsense. |
