With a history dating back to 1869, when Australia had the first regularly formed signal unit in the British Empire, more than 100,000 personnel have served in Australian Signals outfits since the First World War. The official Australian Corps of Signals was formed in January 1925, with the title ‘Royal’ conferred in 1948 by King George VI.
During the many decades the Corps has served Australia, its members have constantly developed and responded to new technologies, giving the Defence Forces a significant competitive edge. Graced with a depiction of the Roman God Mercury, as well as references to the evolution of military communication over the last century, this superbly designed Australian legal tender $1 coin forms a compelling tribute to the Corps’ crucial role.
