Her Majesty ascended the throne on 6 February 1952 and was crowned Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953 at the age of 27. The Monarch visited Australia two years later, in a highly publicised tour, which proved to be a cultural milestone. When the dazzling young Queen disembarked SS Gothic in Sydney on 3 February 1954, she was the first reigning Monarch to set foot on Australian soil and she was greeted by tumultuous adoration.
