Gold Ounce 2023 Farewell Pegasus, Coin from British Virgin Islands
CoinGold Ounce 2023 Farewell Pegasus

The British overseas territory of the Virgin Islands has used the United States Dollar as its currency since 1959 - even before it gained autonomy in 1967. However, the territory has also authorised a number of mints to issue non-circulating and bullion coins under its name, denominated in British Virgin Islands Dollars. These do not circulate as regular currency, and are targeted at collectors investors in precious metals.

One of the formats used for the purpose is the internationally popular one troy ounce (1oz) of gold size.

This unique coin is the very last coin struck by the Pobjoy Mint, and is a farewell to the Pegasus range of bullion coins issued by the mint under the jurisdiction of the British Virgin Islands.

In October 2023, the mint announced that it was closing its doors, and would cease production before the end of the year. The last coin it struck has the reverse of the Pegasus series, and a special privy mark for Taya Pobjoy, the Master of the Mint (and its owner) whose retirement lead to the closure of the mint. The privy mark represents a horse's head with Taya's initial T incuse on it, and a horseshoe - representing her's love of horses.

The coin is denominated as $250 (and not $100 as the regular bullion coins in the series), and is wider in diameter than normal.
