The Kingdom of Cambodia has used its modern Riel currency since it was re-established in 1980; in general circulation, it is mostly served by banknotes.
The country also issues commemorative and bullion coins for the international market, usually in standard bullion sizes - such as the internationally popular one troy ounce of gold format.
This design was announced as the first release in the Asia Big Five Series dedicated to native animals of Asia, and features the Asian Elephant.
Asian elephants are found in 13 countries across Asia, from India and Nepal in the west to Borneo and Sumatra in the east. They inhabit a range of habitats, from tropical forests and grasslands to swamps and scrublands. Asian elephants are highly social animals and live in family groups led by a matriarch. These groups can range in size from a few individuals to over 100 elephants. They communicate through a range of sounds, including trumpeting, rumbling, and growling. In Cambodia, the largest population of Asian elephant occurs in the Eastern Plains Landscape of Mondulkiri province, home to one of Southeast Asia’s last remaining elephant corridors. |
