Starting in 1973, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a number of different coin series honoring the upcoming 1976 Summer Olympics to be held in Montreal. While the mint offered a staggering total of 30 commemorative coins during a three-year run-up to the opening of the Olympic Games, just two of those coins were gold coins. The Royal Canadian Mint’s issuance of commemorative coins starting in 1973 to honor the 21st Olympiad to be held in Montreal, Quebec, was done to help finance the games. Hosting the Olympic Games comes with great visibility for any city and honor, but also great costs. The RCM issued a total of 28 silver coins and 2 gold coins.

On the obverse of each 1976 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Olympic Coin is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This design is just the second-generation effigy from her reign and was created in 1965 by Arnold Machin. As of 2021, it remains one of the longest-used designs in Canadian currency during the Queen’s reign as it was on coins from 1965 to 1989.
The reverse side of the 1976 $100 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Olympic Coin features designs that harken back to the original version of the Olympic Games held by the Greeks. In this design, a Greek Olympian is featured receiving a laurel wreath crown from the goddess Pallas Athena, the goddess of war. Designed by Dora de Pedery-Hunt, the image includes a beaded border with dates honoring the first Ancient Olympic Games in 776 BCE and the 21st modern Summer Games in 1976.
