Despite its powerful frame and massive size, the moose does not subsist on a diet of meats. The primary source of food for the moose is terrestrial and aquatic vegetation. Unlike other species of deer, moose do not live in herds. Instead, moose are solitary animals and only live together for 18 months when young calves are born. A mother will stick by its calf until the age of 18 months, at which point the cow will chase it away.

The antlers of the male moose are unique among members of the deer family.
