All caribou are a subspecies of reindeer living on the North American continent. While the barren-ground caribou and Alaskan caribou tend to live in large congregations and typically only disperse during calving, the woodland boreal follows a different pattern. Most woodland boreal caribou live in smaller groups dispersed from other herds. The woodland caribou disperse even further apart at calving time.
Not only does the woodland caribou live in smaller herds isolated from one another during the winter months, but the woodland caribou is also relatively sedentary compared to the Alaskan caribou and barren-ground caribou. While these two subspecies move over great distances throughout the spring, summer, and fall, the boreal woodland caribou is sedentary and migrates within a 50-150 km range at a maximum.
