The Royal Canadian Mint is one of many producing celebratory Star Trek coins in 2016. This year is the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek television series, and there are a variety of silver and gold coin products in production to help celebrate.
In this particular release, Mr. Spock is featured as the central figure in the design of a ½ oz silver coin. Spock was portrayed throughout much of Star Trek history by actor Leonard Nimoy, who recently passed away in 2015 at the age of 83. Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock set the standard for the current generation of feature film actors filling the role, and it was a position he held continuously from 1966 to 1991, with subsequent appearances in the new generation of feature films from 2009 to his death.
On the reverse of each 2016 ½ oz $10 Canadian Silver Star Trek Spock Coin is the colorized image of Spock, as portrayed by Nimoy, in his customary blue uniform. In the franchise, Spock was the science officer and first officer aboard the Enterprise.
The obverse side of each coin in this series includes the traditional right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, this is the standard image used on the obverse of all Canadian coinage.
As with many other Star Trek coins, the images on the reverse side are the copyright of CBS, which is responsible for the dissemination of these images and other Star Trek-themed designs on any precious metal product.
