Xu Beihong (1895-1953) is considered one of the most influential Chinese artists and the first 20th century Chinese painter to use Western style elements in his works. He was born in 1895 to a poor family in Yixing (Jiangsu Province) and learned traditional Chinese painting from his father, a self-taught artist.
