A nice souvenir, an unusual gift or simply Jablonec nad Nisou tender Jablonec nad Nisou is a statutory town 9 km south-east of Liberec, in the valley of the Nisa river and its affluents. In 2011, the town covering an area of 31.38 sq. km had a population of about 45 thousand. It is well known for its glass and bijou manufacture as well as other industries. The Czech Mint which has minted all Czech circulation coins since the establishment of the independent Czech Republic, has a seat and manufacturing facility in the town. In the town’s close vicinity comprising for example the romantic area Maloskalsko, as well as the popular Jizera mountains, there are plenty of opportunities for various sport activities and tourism. The first written notice of Jablonec dates back to 1356, but the place was not permanently inhabited until the 16th century when the first glassworks were founded in Mšeno and the first church built. A major change occurred in the town’s development in the second half of the 17th century. The glass-making was quickly progressing and, at the same time, Jablonec was proven to be favourably situated for trading. When the first fashion jewellery appeared in the first half of the 18th century and was successfully marketed, nothing stood in the way of the town’s further development. In 1808, Jablonec was advanced to a market-town and, in 1866, a decree issued by emperor Franz Joseph I elevated it to a town. At this time, worldwide trading was already flourishing. Many significant buildings and whole quarters prove the wealth that was coming to Jablonec in the period before WW1. Art-nouveau buildings and private villas in Podhorská and 28. října streets rank among the most striking. Two landmarks were built later on: the church of the Holy Christ’s Heart at Horní square, and the townhall at the present Mírové square. Nominal value of the Jablonec brass farthing is 45 Czech crowns. The obverse side features denomination of the token – 45 Jablonec brass farthings, spires of Jablonec churches and the old and new town hall buildings. On the reverse there is the emblem of Jablonec and text in circumscription. More Less
