Golden ducat Sights in Brno - Petrov proof | Czech Mint
The Mint says about this coin:
Product description This year Czech Mint paid tribute to Brno sights by issuing special mini-series with the same title. It contains two medals with motifs of two spectacular architectural monuments – Špilberk castle and the hill Petrov. If anyone can transfer to a medal more than just a true depiction of the building, namely its spirit, then it definitely is the renowned Czech medallist M. A. Jan Hásek. Accurate depiction of Petrov with the dominating Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul on the obverse side of the medal made of pure gold is another evidence of his art. The reverse side features a display of masterfully rendered architectural monuments of the town of Brno. Petrov is a rocky hill in the very centre of Brno. On this place probably stood the old Brno castle mentioned in the Kosmas Chronicle, as well as a small Romanesque church. The best known building which has been preserved to the present day after various alterations is Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. The original church was built next to the princely castle at Petrov in the 11th century, first as a Romanesque basilica. In the 14th century it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, in mid 18th century in the Baroque style. It became a cathedral church in 1777 when the Brno Bishopric was established here. In the beginning of the 20th century the building underwent a reconstruction in Neo-Gothic style. The interior is very richly decorated and featuresy many sculptures by Ondřej Schweigl. The presbyterium of the cathedral is adorned by seven big stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the life of St. Peter and Paul. The largest of the preserved fragments of the original city fortifications can be seen below the cathedral. Each of the 1,000 pieces forming this limited edition is packed in a special leather case in a new design. It is also worth mentioning that the current low prices of precious metals tempt to buy – the ducat will not only enrich your collection but it will also be a good investment.
