Cult of personality The controversial figure of Karl Marx appears on the second gold ducat of the Czech Mint from the series entitled Cult of personality. As a young revolutionary, the German philosopher Karl Marx personally participated in the revolutionary events of 1848 that led to the end of feudalism in Europe, and then experienced the harsh reality of British liberal capitalism. He was an excellent observer and concluded that the basis of history is class struggle or hatred between two groups of people. These groups are always the rulers and the ruled - the oppressors and the oppressed. Marx was convinced that after the demise of slave-owning and feudal class society, there must also be an end to capitalism in which the proletariat and the bourgeoisie face to each other. The contemporary conflict between the workers and the capitalists who exploit them was, in his view, to culminate in the abolition of private ownership of the means of production and the establishment of a communist society. In this classless utopia, justice would then prevail, which is summed up in the slogan: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs." However, this noble idea, which at first sight is impossible to disagree with and is as relevant today as it was in the 19th century, had numerous gaps. In fact, Marx was creative with the facts, using only data that supported his thesis. He himself did not hesitate to profit from the work of others and to take advantage of sympathizers who supported him financially. Of course, one cannot overlook the fact that Marx's work laid the foundation on which all the communist dictatorships of the world have built to this day. Their strong-willed leaders have manipulated the theory of class struggle to serve their own goals... The obverse side of the ducat, which is the work of academic sculptor Jiří Dostál, presents a characteristic portrait of Karl Marx, accompanied by his name and life dates in English. The reverse side is then dominated by the title and year of publication of Marx's seminal book - DAS KAPITAL, 1867. The way in which communist regimes have turned Marx's work on its head is symbolised by the inverted letter “A“ together with the hammer and sickle, the combination of which forms the letter “P“.
