Apart from the regular circulation coinage of the country, the Czech Mint also issues a variety of non-circulating commemorative coins in precious metals. One of the formats used for these is the 500 Korun coin minted in 25 grams of sterling silver

This coin is the first issue in a five-year series by the Czech National Bank commemorating famous means of transport. It is dedicated to the Škoda 498 steam locomotive nicknamed Albatros.

The pride of Czechoslovak engineering, which originated after the Second World War, excelled in its elegant design, which was supplemented with the paint in the colours of the tri-colour flag. The locomotive was plum blue with a brown-red running gear, red wheel sets and a white roof. Albatros was not only beautiful but also strong. It had a power that set the Czechoslovak speed record of a steam locomotive - 162 km / h. Many Albatros locomotives have covered more than two million kilometres. Their operation was terminated in 1976 - due to the electrification of the Czechoslovak Railways.

This design excels with an original technical solution - the impression of the relief is created thanks to an embossed hologram.
