5000-crown gold coin Gothic bridge in Písek proof | Czech Mint
The Mint says about this coin:
5000-crown gold coin Gothic bridge in Písek proof In 2011, the Czech National Bank began to issue a new series of gold commemorative coins with a nominal value of CZK 5,000 with motifs of bridges built in the Czech Republic. The design of the first coin which is dedicated to the Gothic bridge in Písek was selected in a country-wide anonymous competition. The winner – academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů – won the first prize for the design’s high artistic level and perfect resemblance to the Písek bridge. The bridge was built around 1270 at the initiative of the founder of the town of Písek, the king of Bohemia, Ottokar II (in Czech Přemysl Otakar II.). The seven-arch bridge had originally two bridge towers that were not preserved; one of them was destroyed by flood and the other was pulled down in the 19th century for traffic reasons. The pillars and arches were built from granite blocks: there are six original semicircular arches while the seventh one was built after the flood in 1786 – it is segmented with larger span. The pillars are protected from damage by wooden ice-breakers similar to those that are at the Charles bridge in Prague. The decoration of the bridge comprises the original stone flowers on the pillars and four Baroque sculptural groups placed on central pillars. It is the oldest preserved stone bridge of this size in Bohemia. The right side of the obverse of the coin is decorated with heraldic animals from the state emblem of the Czech Republic: the Czech lion, Moravian female eagle and Silesean female eagle. The statue of St. John of Nepomuk, the worldwide recognized patron of all bridges, placed on the central pillar of the Písek bridge, is on the left. The text in circumscription reads “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA - MOSTY - 5000 Kč“ and then there is the mintmark. The reverse side features the diagonally placed stone bridge viewed slightly from above to emphasize its structure with all arches, structural groups and wooden ice-breakers. The text in circumscription contains the year of issue – 2011, words in Czech – GOTICKÝ MOST V PÍSKU, and the mark of the author. Each coin comes complete with a catalogue card in red colour with the coin description and its relief depiction.
