Product description With the celebration of the arrival of new life into the world is associated a number of rituals. One of them is rooted in a distant history and involves gifting the baby with a gold coin. For anyone who wants to follow this old Czech tradition, the Czech Mint has prepared the gold ducats for the birth of a child. The custom of endowing a newborn baby with valuables made of precious metals first appeared in nobility in the Czech lands, specifically at the Rosenberg dynasty in Renaissance times. They used to give their descendants a decorative gold buttons into the cradle, which were gradually replaced with the gold coins. This custom soon became a fashion, which spread across all layers of the population. A coin, usually a gold ducat, generally dedicated by the godfather or godmother should ensure, that the baby did not suffer poverty in the future. This gift, which became the first investment into the newborn's life and also a good luck charm, the parents cherished until his adulthood. After the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia, the role of a gift for the baby took over the St. Wenceslas ducats and after 1993 the Czech Mint followed this beautiful historic tradition. The talented medal maker Lenka Nebeská, DiS., was inspired by the legend, which says that the stork brings newborn babies to their parents. The obverse side of the ducat is dedicated to the baby in a sling, surrounded by a bird feathers and an inscription DUKÁT K NAROZENÍ DÍTĚTE 2017 /Ducat to the birth of a child 2017/. The reverse side then belongs to the stork with a bundle of joy in its beak. Each golden ducat is stored in a thematic gift package.
