Gold medal Construction of the Prague Astronomical Clock proof To mark the 600th anniversary of the construction of the Old Town Astronomical Clock, Czech Mint has issued a unique commemorative medal featuring the best known Prague monument. The Old Town Astronomical Clock is part of the historic centre of Prague which has been entered in the UNESCO’s List of World Heritage Sites.The Old Town Astronomical Clock dates back to the 14th century when Czech king John of Luxembourg gave permission to Old Town burghers to build it. One of the oldest parts of the astronomical clock is the clock mechanism and the astronomical dial of 1410. The clock mechanism is the work of master horologist Mikuláš (Nicolas) of Kadaň, most probably by the design of Jan Šindel, who later became professor of mathematics and astronomy at the Charles University. The astronomical clock was decorated, among others, also by famous Czech painter Josef Mánes. The stone decorations at the clock are most likely the work of Peter Parler’s masonry.The obverse side of the medal depicts a fragment of the detail of the clock dial and clock mechanism, so-called heart which is formed by three cogwheels.The obverse side features St. Peter’s apostle with a key, who appears at the hour above the astronomical part of the clock, and the Death with a sand-glass that strikes the time and tolls the bell.Limited edition of 600 pieces, numbered at the edge.
