Gold half-ounce medal 400th anniversary of death of Rudolph II proof During the reign of Rudolph II of the Habsburg House (18 July 1552) Prague became a significant political, cultural and artistic centre of Europe. He was undoubtedly one of the most prominent European rulers, his reign and personality have, however, been covered by the veil of secrecy, ambiguities and legends until the present day. Rudolph II, a broad-minded patron of sciences and art as well as alchemy and the occult, seeker of universal truths about life and the world, died on 20 January 1612. The medal commemorates the 400th anniversary of his death.The obverse side features the ruler clad in late-Renaissance clothing of the period. The legend accompanying the portrait includes his name, the year of his death (1612) and the year of the 400th anniversary of his death (2012).The reverse side depicts coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Bohemia. Depiction of both animals in motion also refers to the traditional interpretation of the symbol of eagle as king of the air, and lion as king on the earth.The composition is complemented with personal initials of the ruler and his guiding principle: "F (FULGET):C (CAESARIS):ASTRUM" which translates freely as "Let the Star of the Emperor Shine".Limited edition 200 pcs, numbered.
