Product description New discoveries always pushes the humanity towards understanding of the universe itself, the Earth and its ancient history and also the Czechs were present in a number of these significant moments This year marks the 100th anniversary of the moment when prof. PhDr. Bedčich Hrozný deciphered the Hittite language and assign it to the Indo-European language family. Thus he opened the door to an imaginary research into the history and culture of the former inhabitants of Asia Minor. On this special occasion, the Czech Mint has prepared a unique numismatic delicacy - a thematic one-half troy ounce medal made of pure gold. Bedřich Hrozný was born on 6th May, 1879 in the family of an evangelical pastor. His linguistic talent he used already at high school, where he was tought by Justin Václav Prášek himself, a known orientalist. In his youth Hrozný acquired a except for commonly used languages also Latin, Greek, Arabic and Hebrew. In Vienna, he began studying theology, but soon he changed it for the Faculty of Arts. There he dedicated himself to Sanskrit, Sumerian, Aramaic, Assyrian and Ethiopic, of course he paid attention to cuneiform In 1904 he went to Turkey, Syria, Palestine and Egypt, where he together with prof. Ernst Sellin examined cuneiform texts. A German expedition found Hittite kings archive containing a series of clay tablets described hitherto unknown type of cuneiformin the northeast of Ankara, in 1906. Its secret was deciphered by Bedřich Hrozný during the First World War, when he served as a clerk staff in Vienna. He dicovered that it is the Hittite, and prepared the first scheme of its grammar. Hrozný continued his valuable archaeological work for the rest of his life, however, deciphering of the Hittite, will forever remain his most famous feat. This extraordinary medal also pays tribute to him by the sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů. There is is an original portrait of Bedřich Hrozný bordered by striking embossed background depicting cuneiform. On the obverse side of the coin there is the clay plate with Hittite text and its translation NOW YOU WILL EAT BREAD AND DRINK WATER THEN.
