Product description Vaclav Hollar, the engraver and draughtsman of the 17th century, is one of the greatest Czech artists of all time. He spent most of his life abroad, where he has achieved world renown, but has never forgotten where he came from. He was proud to be Czech, and it is no wonder that when a free association of graphic artists was established in Prague in 1917, it was given his name. The commemoration of the anniversary of this event is based on the half-ounce gold medal of the Czech Mint, which is part of the free cycle of the most beautiful unrealized proposals registrated in competitions of the Czech National Bank. The founding members brought various incentives to the "Association of Czech Graphic Artists Hollar", which they collected at schools, in practice and abroad. Their rich work mirrored the artistic efforts of the whole Europe. Throughout its existence - equal to 100 years - the ACGA differed from such organizations, above all, by being the place of friendly coexistence of more artistic generations. Its members are not bound by a common artistic view, however, by the quality of their work. Frantisek Kupka, Max Svabinsky, Josef Lada or Jan Zrzavy are the most famous giants of that time. The best of Czech graphics is presented by Hollar to this day. Artistic design of the expert medal-maker and sculptor Zbynek Fojtu addressed the expert jury of the Czech National Bank so much that it awarded him the second prize for the "balanced composition of Hollar's portrait and the cat's motif from his most famous engraving with Czech text" on the obverse side and the historical logos of the association on the reverse side of the mintage. The inscriptions of both sides of the medal include the following: VACLAV HOLLAR - GRAPHIC - ENGRAVER - DRAFTSMAN/ ASSOCIATION OF THE CZECH GRAPHIC ARTISTS HOLLAR - 1917 - 2017. A half-ounce gold medal comes in a mere 99 pieces hand-numbered on the edge. An illustrated certificate of authenticity that reminds us of the importance of our oldest artistic association is part of each of them. More Less
