Product description The Czech Mint introduces free cycle of half-ounce gold medals whose appearance is based on the most beautiful unrealized designs entered in the competition of the Czech National Bank while it welcomes its first woman. It is not none other than Maria Theresa, who celebrates 300th anniversary of her birth. The fact, that the reign of Maria Theresa was not going to be easy, was clear even before her birth. Her father, Charles VI., the last living royal of the House of Habsburg in the male line, was not able to father an offspring, so he pinned all his hopes on his daughter. Although the release of his so-called Pragmatic Sanction allowed her to control the Habsburg possessions, not all European powers were willing to accept a woman ruling the throne. The battles, which broke out after her coming to power, became known as the War of the Austrian Succession and they fully reflected the backwardness of the Habsburg Empire. A failures, which the ambitious and headstrong ruler bore with difficulty, became the pretext to make the extensive reforms. In over forty years of the reign of Maria Theresa, these reforms improved the national status and bad situation of serfs. She was admired not only by her empire, but also by her enemies. The fancy obverse side of this medal is dominated by the figure of Maria Theresa dressed in complicated clothing and there are crown jewels on the pillow on her side. An inscription on the obverse side of the medal shows the name of the monarch and the annual dates 1717 and 2017. The reverse side is filled with heraldic signs of the Theresian empires, which are surrounded by the monarch full name: MARIA THERESIA WALBURGA AMALIA CHRISTIANA. The author of the visual image of the medal is Martin Dašek, DiS., an excellent portraitist, whose competition proposal impressed the Czech National Bank so much, that he was awarded an extra bonus. The half-ounce gold commemoration of the majestic monarch comes in an issue of just 99 pieces. Each of them is numbered and illustrated by certificate of authenticity, which resembles Maria Theresa's tortuous path to glory. More Less
