Product description Jan Brokoff died in 1718, three centuries ago. The Czech Mint issued the gold half-ounce medal that is a part of the free cycle of the most beautiful unrealized designs registered in the Czech National Bank competitions in order to commemorate the famous baroque sculptor. The story of the sculptor´s Brokoff family began in Slovak Spišská Sobota in 1652, when a boy named John was born. He liked to draw and carve in his father's shoe workshop, and so his parents provided him the teaching by the local carver. Soon, the town situated in Tatra Mountains became even smaller for him and he went into the world. Jan Brokoff´s sculptural works with motifs of the seasons, Christianity and ancient Greek sceneries such as the Pieta sculpture in Prague, or the statue of God Triton from the castle fountain in Klášterec nad Ohří remained in the Czech lands. However, a bronze statue of John of Nepomuk intended for the Charles Bridge made him famous. Jan Brokoff is often considered as an average sculptor whose greatest contribution to the world baroque was his gifted son Ferdinand Maxmilian. However, his John of Nepomuk became a model for most of the future portrayals of this saint not only in our country but throughout Europe. The statue of the czech patron remains an icon without which our capital would not be complete even three hundred years after the artist's death in 1718. The work of the medal maker and teacher Vojtěch Dostál, DiS., was awarded by the expert committee of the Czech National Bank "for a perfect representation of the detail of the statue of St. John of Nepomuk with the Charles Bridge in the background and the statue of Triton from the castle fountain in Klášterec nad Ohří". Gold half-ounce medal was issued in cost of only 99 pieces each of which is hand-numbered on the edge and complemented by an illustrated certificate of authenticity that commemorates the life and work of John Brokoff.
