Product description The Czech Mint issued a half-ounce gold medal on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of foundation of the Czechoslovak Red Cross. The medal is part of the free cycle of the most beautiful unrealized designs submitted to the Czech National Bank competitions. When the Swiss businessman Henri Dunant went to Italy to obtain a business license in 1859, he certainly did not know how many human lives he would save in the future. He witnessed a battle that killed 6,000 soldiers in a single day, and another 25,000 were injured at the Italian town of Solferino. Suffering and lack of medical care impressed him so much that he had forgotten his original intentions and offered his help. He wrote down his experience and sent to dignitaries across Europe. He proposed to establish an international organization to help wounded soldiers and to protect medical staff. This movement originated in 1863 and entered the history as the Red Cross. The Czech lands suffered too. Patriotic Assistance Society of the Czech Kingdom was established five years after the establishment of the Red Cross and had a lot of work especially during the First World War. The official czech arm of the international organization was established in 1919. The establishment of the Czechoslovak Red Cross was decided at a meeting of social workers in the Municipal House of Prague, and a delegation was sent to T. G. Masaryk with the request for approval of the next steps. The President expressed his support on February 6, 1919 and charged his daughter PhDr. Alicia Masaryk to organize the CSCK. She soon became the first chairman of the organization for 20 years. The commemorative medal is based on the proposal of the medal maker MgA. Martin Dašek. Martin Dašek joined the Czech National Bank's art contest and won the second place "for different crosses on both sides and nicely embedded heraldic figures". The cross on the obverse side presents a scene from the Lazaret, where the doctor takes care of the sick people. The heraldic animals of the Czech Republic are incorporated into the cross on the reverse side. This composition is surrounded by an inscription of the basic principles of the Red Cross, which are HUMANITY, REPUTATION, INDEPENDENCE, VOLUNTARITY, IMPARTIALITY, NEUTRALITY, and UNITY. The schedule of issuance counts only 99 pieces of medals hand-numbered on the edge. Every medal includes an illustrated certificate of authenticity that tells the story of a charity movement.
