Product description The work of the controversial artist Jiří David, famous for his open opinions and diverse creations, evokes many contrasting emotions. The half-ounce gold medal he designed for the Art for Václav Havel series is certain not to leave critics calm. His composition is very untraditional and bears an interesting message of thought and charity. The Art for Václav Havel series is a collaboration of the Dagmar and Václav Havel VIZE 97 Foundation, Czech Mint and the leading Czech artists, Bořek Šípek, Jiří David, Kurt Gebauer, Aleš Lamr, David Černý, Jaroslav Róna and Olbram Zoubek. They chose to contribute with their work towards fulfilling former President Václav Havel’s big dream of preserving St. Anne’s Church known as the Prague Crossroads. The proceeds from the sale of the medals will be used for this good cause. Jiří David is one of the best-known Czech artists. He founded the legendary Tvrdohlaví art group (which no longer exists), he paints, photographs, creates objects, installations, and is a teacher as well. Jiří David is the author of the renowned Neon Heart installed at Prague Castle. It was made as homage to President Václav Havel who lit it up personally on the 17th of November 2002. The symbol of understanding, love and the need for positive communication was supposed to decorate Prague until Friday the 31st of January 2003. However, Greenpeace activists suspended a banner with “War?” written on it inside the heart, voicing their disapproval of Havel’s support of the US invasion into Iraq, and so the heart was removed somewhat earlier. That was not the only modification the installation underwent – the Ztohoven activists made it to the scaffolds in their third and successful attempt on the eve of the presidential election of 14th of January 2003 and used a cardboard panel to transform the heart into a question mark. The police detained them for this, but Václav Havel and the minister of culture recognised their act as being art in public space, and the author himself, Jiří David, wanted to preserve the modification. David’s unconventional perspective is also reflected in the design of the gold medal weighing one half of a Troy ounce. The reverse side depicts St. Anne’s face with the ground plan of her church’s nave. The obverse side bears an avant-garde composition symbolising the crossroads, conflicts, directions, starting points and the chaos defining human being.
