Gold one ounce medal Karlštejn castle proof | Czech Mint
The Mint says about this coin:
Product description Our country is, due to its rich history, an inexhaustible reservoir of jewels from all periods of history and artistic trends. If we wanted to select only a handful of them, which would represent the Czech Republic in the challenging global competition, we certainly would not miss an architectural gem from the 14th century - Karlštejn Castle. This unique object was highlighted by many artists in their pieces of work during centuries, and now The Czech Mint joins the celebration of the exceptional castle, and dedicatesan extraordinary issue of investment one-ounce gold medal to it. Karlštejn occupies a privileged position among Czech castles by right. It was founded in 1348 by Charles IV in order to deposit safely national treasures, especially the precious collection of holy relics and the crown jewels of the Roman Empire. The majestic building was completed in 1365. During the Hussite wars Karlštejn Castle also served as a repository of Czech crown jewels, that remained there for approximately 200 years. After 1480, the Castle was reconstructed in Gothic style and later, at the end of the 16th century, in Renaissance style. The current look of Karlštejn comes from the last reconstruction, which took place in the late 19th century. Unusual terraced arrangement of single buildings offers visitors a truly breathtaking experience. From the lowest lying parts: the Outer ward, the Well Tower and the Burgrave House you can go up to the five-floor Imperial Palace and the Marian Tower placed over it. The highest point of the promontory is dominated by the 60 meters high Big Tower and mighty fortifications. The interior of the castle hides the original paintings from the 14th century and in the Chapel of the Holy Cross there are 129 wall paintings by the Gothic painter Master Theodoric. The impressive castle area also houses the largest national portrait gallery of Czech rulers and a replica of St. Wenceslas coronation crown of the Czech kings. Charming work in the form of one troy ounce medal of pure gold presents an excellent handwriting of the gifted artist MgA. Jan Hásek, who, in the obverse side, managed to capture the stunning view of the whole building of Karlštejn with all its impressive details. The reverse side is decorated with relief sculptures of both coronation crowns – the Roman emperors`crown as well as the Czech kings`crown. The design is completed with the inscription KAREL IV ROMAN EMPEROR CZECH KING. Engaging medal bears significant artistic value, at the same time is also a guarantee of securely stored financial reserves. With only 100 pieces of medals, Karlštejn is an attractive challenge for all numismatic enthusiasts.
