Stories of Our History The Czech Mint dedicated the series "Stories of our history" together with the fifth gold medal weighing one troy ounce to the Czech Boy Scouts. The story of the Scouts, whose main motif is duty - to themself, neighbor, homeland, planet, and all mankind - was written by Englishman Robert Baden-Powell. An enthusiastic explorer and expert on forest wisdom decided to dedicate his experience to the next generation of boys in order to bring them up as good citizens. His handbooks and camps contributed to the foundation of Scout Association in 1907. Ideas that emphasized honor, friendship, respect for values, and love for nature have spread rapidly throughout the world - including Austria-Hungary at that time. Czech teacher Antonín Benjamin Svojsík went to England in 1911 to know what it meant to be a Boy Scout. The hustle, the fine order and the concord of the boys in their uniforms with scarves and hats charmed him. He came back with determination to promote scouting. His book entitled Fundamentals of Scouting was published the very next year, and the first scout camp for thirteen boys was held near Lipnice Castle. The iconic tent with a undercoat was created by the Czech scout leaders a year later. Girls were allowed to join Scouts in 1915. The turbulent 20th century then brought a lot of obstacles to scouts, but they endured in the spirit of their motto "Be prepared!". Interest in scouting is currently growing. Medal maker MgA. Martin Dašek placed the Czech flag together with characteristic scout iconography - a hat, a lily and a badge with three eagle feathers, which the junks earn for fulfilling three challanges of silence, hunger and solitude on the obverse side of the medal. The inscription presents the current name of the JUNÁK – THE CZECH SCOUT Association accompanied by the motto BE READY. On the reverse side you will find a group of scouts sitting by the fire in front of the tent with undercoat. The dates in the inscription commemorate the establishment of the organization in 1912, the foundation of "The Boy Scouts Association of the Czechoslovak Republic" in 1919 and the triple renewal of the organization in 1945, 1968, 1989. Each of only 100 pieces of medals is hand-numbered on the edge and has a special certificate of origin. More Less
