Silver one-ounce medal Sights in Brno - Petrov proof | Czech Mint
The Mint says about this coin:
Product description Czech Mint has decided to pay tribute to the immense cultural heritage of the town of Brno with special mini-series entitled Brno Sights which highlight two most significant monuments – Špilberk and Petrov. Silver one-ounce medal Brno Sights – Petrov is an outstanding work of art by Jan Hásek, foremost Czech creative artist. We can also find his signature under very successful motifs of some of the medals in Czech Mint‘s series Castles and Chateaux. On the reverse side of the medal dedicated to Petrov the artist depicted the noble structure of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral surrounded by smaller Baroque buildings. The reverse side is a display of the most impressive preserved historic buildings which Brno has to offer. Petrov is a rocky hill in the very centre of Brno. On this place probably stood the old Brno castle mentioned in the Kosmas Chronicle, as well as a small Romanesque church. The best known building which has been preserved to the present day after various alterations is Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. The original church was built next to the princely castle at Petrov in the 11th century, first as a Romanesque basilica. In the 14th century it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, in mid 18th century in the Baroque style. It became a cathedral church in 1777 when the Brno Bishopric was established here. In the beginning of the 20th century the building underwent a reconstruction in Neo-Gothic style. The interior is very richly decorated and features many sculptures by Ondřej Schweigl. The presbyterium of the cathedral is adorned by seven big stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the life of St. Peter and Paul. The largest of the preserved fragments of the original city fortifications can be seen below the cathedral. This medal will bring into your collection a reflection of an almost one thousand-years-old history in the form of an artistic gem with a great investment potential – because prices of silver are now temporarily very favourable.
