Replica of Ferdinand II Brno thaler standard | Czech Mint

Tribute to Historical Mints series Replica of Ferdinand II Brno thaler was designed by the original coin and is struck from an ounce of pure silver. The mint in Brno reopened at the beginning of the 17th century – in 1619 – after more than one hundred years. It was seated in the palace of the Olomouc bishop, cardinal František of Dietrichstein, at Zelný trh. The most striking Brno coinage from the Thirty Years’ War is a thaler dated 1621. The thalers were preserved in the form of proofs struck on a square blank, we may therefore assume that they were made as proof coinage or for representation purposes and were not intended for normal circulation. The history of coin mintage in the Dietrichstein palace is not very long – it was discontinued between 1646 and 1648. The obverse side of the coin features a crowned figure of Ferdinand II standing astride and holding the sceptre in his right hand and the imperial orb in his left hand. At the lower rim we can see tiny letters “GR“ (mark of "iron cutter"). The reverse side of the coin is dominated by the imperial eagle with a distinct crown reaching out to the annulus. The eagle’s chest is decorated with a complex shield containing coats-of-arms of countries governed at the time by both branches of the House of Habsburg, entwined by the Golden Fleece chain. The Habsburg family coat-of-arms is placed below the imperial eagle. Two tiny interconnected letters “HP“ (sign of the mintmaster Hans Pecz) show in front of the year (“1621“). The text in circumscription in Latin comprising the name and titles of the issuer begins at the upper rim of the obverse side and continues at the reverse side; it is therefore necessary to read it as one sentence: FERDINANDVS . II. D[EI] . G[RATIA] . R[OMANORVM] . I[MPERATOR] . S[EMPER] . A[VGVSTVS] . G[ERMANIAE] . H[VNGARIAE] . B[OHEMIAE] . REX . ARCHID[VX] . AVS[TRIAE] . DVX . BVR[GVNDIAE] . MA[RCHIO] . MO[RAVIAE] . 1621. It can be freely translated into English as follows: Ferdinand II, by the Grace of God the Roman Emperor, always Multiplicator of the Empire, King of Germany, Hungary and Bohemia, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy, Margrave of Moravia 1621. prof.
