Product description In the series Tribute to Historical Mints Czech Mint gradually introduced fourteen replicas of silver historical coins, which serve as evidence of the great skill of our ancient mint masters. The last addition to the series is the Těšín thaler of Václav Těšínský. The mint in Těšín was first mentioned in writing in 1290 and we can thus assume that the mint was in operation already at the end of the 13th century. Since that time many owners had the mintage right including the Těšín noble family of Piasts and the town itself. In the beginning just small coins (several types of hellers) were struck in the mint, but later on various larger mintages were added – often modeled by Polish coins. However, the Silesian Chamber and the emperor himself disliked this practice – and it was also one of the reasons for the temporary closure of the mint between 1574 and 1597. The mintage then continued until 1655 when the mint was closed for good – shortly after the Piast family died out. The building where the mint was situated still stands – we can find it in the Polish part of Těšín (Cieszyn). The oldest Těšín thaler was selected as a model for the replica designed by academic painter Jan Lukáš; the thaler had been struck in the name of prince Václav Těšínský to whom the author dedicated the obverse side of the thaler. The reverse is dominated by the coat-of-arms of the Těšín Piasts and personal motto of Václav Těšínský "Boží požehnání obohacuje“ (God’s blessing enriches).
