Equatorial Guinea uses the Central African CFA Franc, which is a common currency of several states in Central Africa.
Apart from the regular circulating coinage - which does not bear an inscription identifying a specific issuing country - the republic has also authorised some foreign mints to issue commemorative and bullion coins under its jurisdiction. These are typically in standard bullion sizes, such as one ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum), and carry the legend and state symbols of Equatorial Guinea. The coins are legal tender in all member states of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC: abbreviated from the French "Communauté Économique et Monétaire de l'Afrique Centrale").
Uniquely, the inscriptions are in Spanish, as Equatorial Guinea is the only Spanish-speaking country in the CFA zone (and, indeed, in the whole of Africa).
This coin is part of the third release in the Equatorial Guinea Giraffe series by the Scottsdale Mint, which has a new design every year.
The mint says about it: In the heart of Equatorial Guinea's lush landscapes, the graceful silhouette of the giraffe emerges as a testament to the region's diverse and unique wildlife. Standing tall with a neck that seems to touch the heavens, the Equatorial Guinea giraffe epitomizes nature's artistry in the form of an elegant giant.
With each gentle stride, it navigates the verdant expanse, a living embodiment of resilience against the challenges of its environment. As the sun casts dappled shadows through the trees, the giraffe's striking spots blend seamlessly with the foliage, underscoring its harmonious bond with the land it calls home. |
