In the 19th century, the United Kingdom became the first nation to introduce postage stamps. At the time, postal rates were varied and confusing throughout the UK and an effort was undertaken to establish uniform rates and prepayment for postage in the form of stamps. The Penny Black is famous as the first-ever adhesive postage stamp, but its history is shorter than that of its successor. The development of postage stamps in the UK was part of a broader postal reform led by Rowland Hill in the late 1830s. Hill proposed a uniform penny postage rate and the concept of prepayment using adhesive stamps. The first step in this process was the release of the Penny Black on May 1, 1840.
The Penny Red was introduced in February 1841, just nine months after the Penny Black. It was designed to address issues with the Penny Black and became one of the longest-running stamp series in postal history.
