Description | The kip (Lao: ກີບ; sign: ₭ or ₭N), officially: ເງີນກີບລາວ, has been the currency of Laos since 1955. Historically, one kip was divided into 100 att (ອັດ). The Royal Kip was introduced in 1955 when the Kingdom of Laos gained independence from France, replacing the French Indochinese piastre at par. The Pathet Lao kip was introduced sometime before 1976 in the areas which were under the control of the Pathet Lao. In 1976, the Pathet Lao kip replaced the Royal Kip throughout Laos following the Pathet Lao's take over of the country - when the country became a republic. On 16 December 1979, the former Pathet Lao “Liberation” kip was replaced by the new Lao kip at a rate of 100 to 1. Due to inflation, the denomination is no longer subdivided into smaller units. |
