Laos (officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic) has been using the Lao Kip as its currency since 1955. In normal everyday circulation, it is normally served by banknotes and not coins. The country has however authorised some foreign mints to issue bullion coins under its jurisdiction. These are in standard bullion sizes, such as one ounce of gold - designated as 1 oz Au, where Au is abbreviated from Aurum, the Latin word for gold. This coin is the first gold ounce release in the Tiger (Panthera Tigris) series of premium bullion coins, and is dedicated to the Indochinese tiger. Tigers were once widespread throughout most of the forested areas across Laos, but today they have disappeared from many parts of the country. Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area is one of the few places where tigers can naturally survive outside of zoos. | ||||||
