This coin is part of the Mongolian Wildlife Protection series. This immensely popular series started in 2007 with the then revolutionary and innovative Gulo Gulo coin. Three years later, CIT presented the successor Ural Owl and subsequent issues have been launched annually ever since. The frontal portrait in an antique finish relief and the piercing Swarovski crystal eyes have become the trademark of the collection.

Campbell’s dwarf hamsters (Phodopus campbelli) originate from Mongolia, northeast China and southern Siberia but are nowadays bred worldwide and kept as pets. They are usually more active during the day than the golden hamster which is equally popular. Adult Campbell’s hamster reach a body size of eight to ten centimetres. The small rodents feed mainly on various plant seeds and occasionally on small insects.
