Background information The Ural Owl (Strix uralensis) is a reasonably large bird in the owl family (Strigidae). This species is smaller than the related Lapland owl but much larger than the related tawny owl. Full-grown specimens range in total length from 50 to 64 cm (20 to 25 inches), and their wingspan can vary in the species from 110 to 134 cm (3 ft 7 inch to 4 ft 5 inch). The Ural Owl breeds in the Siberian forests, usually near water. It has a wide variety of prey: mice, frogs, and birds. And he’s known for attacking anyone who gets too close to his offspring.
