Snow leopards evolved to live in the harsh, cold environments of Central and South Asia’s high mountains. They are believed to have diverged from their common ancestor with tigers about 3.9 million years ago. Despite their name and appearance, genetic studies show that snow leopards are more closely related to tigers than to leopards. They are the only species in their genus that lacks the ability to roar, due to the structure of their hyoid bone and vocal folds.
