The Mint says about this coin:
This 2-dollar commemorative coin, struck at the Helvetic Mint, for the Pacific Island of Niue, is a magnificent tribute to the Panama Canal, a 48-mile ship canal in Panama connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The Panama Canal opened to traffic 100 years ago on August 15, 1914. A strictly limited edition, with a surprisingly low mintage of just 500 pieces, the coin is struck of 50 g silver .999 in proof-like quality. The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Her Majesty Elizabeth II surrounded by the following inscriptions: the Queen’s name, the face value of the coin, its issuing country and year. The reverse displays a colorful printed scene of a ship (possibly the SS Ancon, the first vessel to officially traverse the canal). There is also a medal by French artist Louis Oscar Roty dedicated to completion of the canal. The construction of the canal began in 1904. During the ten years of works, more than 56,000 people from over 30 countries came to Panama to participate in the project. Since its opening, the Panama Canal has let more than one million ships through it! The background contains some palm leaves, shells and other nautical elements. Presented in a stylized box, the coin is one of those rarities that will enrich your collection! Material: 999 Boxed. Date of issue: 2014 Weight: 50 g Comes with Certificate of Authenticity.
