Although Australia's role in the campaigns at Gallipoli and on the Western Front are more well known, the sacrifices made and the victories achieved by Australian forces in the Middle East Campaign were no less important.Initially defending the Suez Canal and Sinai Peninsula, Australian forces fought a mobile war against the soldiers of the Turkish Ottoman Empire. Following a series of sweeping defeats - with the Allies capturing Gaza and Jerusalem in 1917, and Lebanon and Syria in 1918 - the Ottoman Empire signed an Armistice ending the conflict in the Middle East in October 1918.
