Going on with the Giants of Art series, this stunning set of twelve bullion coins of pure .999 silver pays tribute to Michelangelo, a great Italian artist of the High Renaissance, and his fresco “The Creation of Adam”. It can be seen on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City, Italy. This coin set by Niue weighs 960 g and measures 366 x 165 mm that makes it one of the biggest commemorative coins in the world. The obverse of each rectangular-shaped coin bears the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Around the effigy, there are the inscriptions indicating the name of the Queen, the face value of the silver proof coin, its issuing country and year. Each coin in this masterpiece set features a cut-out from The Creation of Adam and when displayed together, depicts a replica of the original piece. This fresco by Michelangelo is probably one of the most renowned images in the world. Completed in about 1511, it depicts God the father creating Adam and was one the last panels to be completed, telling the story of Genesis. The most essential point of the episode of the Creation of Adam fresco is the contact between God’s and Adam’s fingers, through which the breath of life is conveyed.
