A Great Horned Owl is vividly depicted on the the mirror-like finish of this proof coin. Renowned for its ferocity, this bird of prey inhabits forests swamps, coastal mangroves and rocky desert canyons from the Arctic tundra in Canada to the pampas of South America. The obverse of the Niue coin bears the effigy of Her Majesty Elizabeth II. The inscriptions surrounding the portrait include the Queen’s name, the name of the issuing country, the face value of the coin and its issuing year. The reverse dramatically captures a Great Horned Owl considered one of the largest of North American owls. This bird kills and eats small to medium mammals and even large birds.
