He is mostly known for his portraits of Russian and foreign political leaders and social activists. Paintings devoted to his motherland and its people are the core subject of his works, embracing not only battle and genre scenes, but also portraits of historical figures and landscape paintings (one of them – “Summer. Suzdal” is depicted on the obverse of the coin). The painter was inspired by Russian folklore and ancient Orthodox art. The portrait “Russian Beauty” from 1968 was created according to this artistic convention. It illustrates a comely young lady wearing a kokoshnik (a traditional Russian headdress worn by women) with a deck of cards in her hand. The wooden frame of the painting resembles nalichniki (ornate old Russian window frame). It was an icon adorned with freshwater pearls that inspired Ilya Glazunov to create this portrait. The headdress of the “Russian Beauty” was intricately decorated in the same way.
