Currier & Ives was a famous American printing corporation started first by Nathaniel Currier in 1834, and remained in operation in New York City until 1907. The firm, which eventually included partner James Merritt Ives, created lithographs from black-and-white prints and then hand-colored each product.
For the 2017 1 oz Niue Silver Currier & Ives Snowflake Coin, Coin Jewels revived one of the most iconic lithographs the company created. Created in 1862, Central Park Winter was a colorized lithograph from Currier & Ives that featured a couple at the center of a large group of skaters on a frozen pond during a New York winter.
On the reverse of the Silver Currier & Ives Snowflake Coin is the image of the couple skating along the frozen pond, captured on this coin all by themselves as they enjoy the brisk air and a skate along the ice in Central Park. Engravings include images of snowflakes and the greeting of “Happy Holidays.”
The obverse of the 2017 1 oz Niue Silver Currier & Ives Snowflake Coin features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This effigy is the fourth-generation depiction and it was designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. Both sides of the coin have a beautiful, handmade filigree snowflake that is, like all snowflakes, one of a kind. |
