This large, 40mm diameter pure silver dollar celebrates the 120th Anniversary of Australia’s most famous heritage railroad, the historic Puffing Billy railway! Known throughout the world, the Puffing Billy Railway is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge heritage railway in the Dandenong Mountain Ranges outside of Melbourne, Australia.

The railway was originally one of five narrow gauge lines of the Victorian Railways begun in the early years of the 20th century. The line was opened in 1900 to serve the local farming and timber community. It originally ran from Upper Ferntree Gully station, the terminus of the broad gauge line from Melbourne and now part of Melbourne's suburban railway system, but it now begins at Belgrave. It runs through the southern foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, from Belgrade to Gembrook. Being close to the city of Melbourne and with a post-preservation history spanning over 50 years, the line is one of the most popular steam heritage railways in the world, attracting tourists from all over Australia and overseas.

The railway aims to preserve and restore the line as near as possible to how it was in the first three decades of its existence, with particular emphasis on the early 1920s. The Puffing Billy Railway is kept in operation through the efforts of volunteers of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society, although intensive year-round operations have led to a few dozen paid employees to keep things going behind the scenes.

Obverse
The extremely narrow gauge Puffing Billy railway chugs along its track through the lush Victorian countryside. The legend PUFFING BILLY, cleverly concealed in the plume of smoke from the locomotive engine, indicates the theme. There are no other legends on this side of the coin, to enhance the vignette.

Reverse
Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in crowned profile facing right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl earrings, was executed by the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend ELIZABETH II, the date of issue and denomination also appear, while the legend 1 OZ 999 SILVER guarantees the weight and purity.

Packaging
The coin is encapsulated inside a luxurious, clamshell-style presentation case, lined with black velvet and protected by a full color outer box. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is included.
